USC SCA (Spielberg and Lucas Dedication)

I found this while surfing the net, researching "The Spirit of Troy," the University of Southern California's Trojan Marching Band. Not a bad find...

Back at the turn of the 90s, when we attended what was then known as the School of Cinema-Television at the University of Southern California, we always considered our institution the best film school in the world and it was an easy argument to make. Buildings and production facilities with the names of George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Johnny Carson, Harold Lloyd, and Marcia Lucas formed the centerpiece of the physical campus, and when these were dedicated back in 1983, it made international news. A somewhat forgotten fact of university cinema studies is that majoring in film wasn’t always considered to be a legitimate pursuit by many, but suddenly, the most state-of-the-art section of the USC Campus was its film program, a department which had previously shared space with the Trojan Band in a space known as “the stables.”

It was a great school, no doubt, but in fairness, there were other strong contenders for the title of best in the world at the time, including NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, and the venerable American Film Institute, on the graduate level. But after recently attending the dedication of the new campus of what is now known as the USC School of Cinematic Arts (SCA), it was obvious that it will truly be difficult for any other school to compete with USC in the near future, at least facility-wise, because the new buildings which were unveiled to us were futuristic and a little mind-blowing. And there are still several more under construction.

Chano's Mexican Restaurant

Chano's Drivethru...

Star rating (5)

Looking for a quick pastrami sandwich? Chanos specializes in Mexican eats, but are just as well known for their pastrami sandwiches.

This is not a sit-down dining experience, but the sandwiches are nice and it caters to the quick in-and-out, fast food diners. Meals are reasonably priced.

Chanos is best known as a late night walk-up restaurant serving the student population at the University of Southern California.

Enjoy, and Fight On!

Easy Dining

The Woodspoon, Brazilian Cuisine

The Woodspoon
107 West 9th St
Los Angeles, CA 90015
213-629-1765

Star rating (5)

Tucked away in a humble restaurant space on 9th Street, the Woodspoon is a delightful little diner. Dress is casual, the atmosphere is very relaxed, and Chef Natalia frequently interacts with her customers.

The dining experience is not quite the norm for California. Dishes are generally great, particularly any of the salads or greens. The chicken pot pie is excellent as is the "pork burger." The flan and coconut flan are particularly tasty.

Don't expect quick service or you will be disappointed. The atmosphere is "mom and pops" and owner Nataly cooks everything on the menu. It takes a little while to get your meals, but once you are prepared for the 'slow' service, the meals are delicious.
